Peter Hoffer was born in 1965 in Brantford, Ontario. In 1992, he received his BFA in Fine Arts at the University of Guelph in Ontario, and his MFA at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec in 1995.

The process, technique, and materials used in Hoffer’s contemporary paintings are as important as the subject matter that he conveys.  Hoffer paints directly on board and torn canvas before he cracks, stresses, and treats layers of paint.  This process creates washes of paint that stain the foreground, before each canvas is finished with a thick coating of glass-like resin. Standing before one of Hoffer’s finished paintings it becomes easy to integrate yourself into the scenery as your reflection blends in with the waterfalls and landscapes.

Hoffer has exhibited extensively throughout Canada, and been awarded several prizes, including the Experimental Arts Award from the Ontario College of Art (1991); the Odette Scholarship Award, Toronto (1991); Long Term grants from Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (1999); a Canada Council Travel Grant (1999); and the Peoples Choice Award, Montréal, Québec.  Hoffer has works in public and private collections including Cirque du Soliel, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, and Merrill Lynch in New York.
