Tony Angell

Watch Tony Angell Artist directed by John Forsen for Fidgit TV

Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Tony Angell moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1959 to attend the University of Washington on a track scholarship.  He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in speech communication, and became a teacher shortly thereafter.  Although Angell never formally trained as an artist, he has incredible natural talent; his paintings, drawings, and sculptures are rendered with meticulous accuracy.  Angell’s family was instrumental in encouraging his creativity, his mother was a painter and inspired his composition and fluidity; his grandfather, a craftsman and woodworker, taught him to work with his hands. Angell’s father also demonstrated the importance of strong intellect and a sharp eye while working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Angell has illustrated and co-authored many articles and books. His most recent book, "The House of Owls," published by Yale University Press reached The New York Times Best Sellers list and is the winner of the 2015 National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) in the Nature and the Environment category.  “Gifts of the Crow" was published in 2012 to postive reviews. His previous book "In the Company of Crows and Ravens,” was also co-written with J. Marzluff and released in 2005.  The book was awarded the First Place (Book Illustration) and Overall Winner awards for the illustrations in 2006 by the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum in London.  Angell has exhibited consistently throughout the United States since 1970. His work can be found in many private collections and in public collections including the Frye Art Museum in Seattle; the Museum of Wildlife in Jackson, Wyoming; the Seattle Aquarium; the Seattle Woodland Park Zoo; and Cornell University.
