A Continuing Cultural Legacy Works by Alden Mason, Tony Angell & David Schwarz on view at the Wright Exhibition Space
This Spring, Safeco Insurance donated over 800 works of Northwest Art from their Safeco Art Collection to the Washington Art Consortium.

A Continuing Cultural Legacy is an exhibition curated by Beth Sellars to serve as a tribute to Safeco Insurance's 35 years of collecting art that was created by the innovators of Northwest Art. Eighty-five artists are represented in the exhibition, spanning over 100 years from the late 1800s to today's contemporary artists. Many links that were formed between the generations of artist are visually presented in an attempt to suggest the historic framework of Northwest Art. Of primary focus is the considerable selection of excellent work included in the collection and the curatorial expertise demonstrated by the the Safeco Art Collection curators in their acquisitions.
Foster/White Gallery is proud to announce the inclusion of works by Alden Mason, Tony Angell, David Schwarz, and George Tsutakawa in the exhibition along side Northwest masters Mark Tobey, Kenneth Callahan, Helmi Juvonen and Morris Graves.

Foster/White Gallery seeks 6 - 9 artists for three outdoor sculpture exhibitions during the months of June through September. Each exhibition is six weeks long and allows for one day installation and one day de-installation. All work must be weatherproof, free standing, maximally 11 x 19 x 10.5 feet and minimally 6 x 3 x 3 feet (H x W x D)

June 10 - July 27: installation June 9, de-installation July 28
July 14 - August 25: installation July 13, de-installation August 26
August 12 - September 21: installation August 11, de-installation September 22

Will Robinson, Seattle Times Sculptor Welcomes Yakima Controversy

YAKIMA — Will Robinson isn't normally so controversial.
In fact, the Bremerton-based artist who created a much-debated sculpture installed last month on Yakima's Front Street, was kind of surprised when he discovered the hubbub the piece kicked up.
Speaking Tuesday at the monthly Downtown Yakima Business Roundtable breakfast, Robinson said he didn't realize there was an issue at all until people pointed him to news stories late last year.
"It's not an offensive piece of art," he said of the coil-shaped, abstract granite sculpture.
He suspects some of the criticism may have been just a knee-jerk reaction among people who are opposed to the very concept of public art. But public art like his piece generally helps the aesthetic of an area, something communities need to consider if they court tourists as Yakima does, he said.
"If it's 'Anywhere, America,' if it's Jack in the Box and homogenized, why in the hell would anybody come back? ... You go to the places where it's interesting, where it's beautiful," Robinson said.

Introducing Photographer Toby Smith
Foster/White Gallery is pleased to welcome London based photographer Toby Smith. His newest series Light After Dark is a "re-visioning of energy and British landscape." Throughout 2008 Toby visited all 32 power stations in England, documenting them nocturnally. Says the artist: "At night, their character changes to something more reverent, sinister and certainly otherworldly. Powerful site-lights illuminate the plumes of smoke, vapor and their own utilitarian architecture. The mechanical eye of the camera and the sensitive film surface can perceive detail and light levels far beyond our own nocturnal perception. With extreme exposures each night sky takes its own hue inexplicably linked to the light bleeding from the very city powered by each station."
