To love a dog is to love oneself.
The dog has been a trusted companion and particularly responsive to human care for centuries. According to the Chinese zodiac, the dog is born under the signs of loyalty and anxiety. In many world mythologies, the dog is a companion to humans both in life and in death. Canine guardians fend off intruders, demonstrate unyielding devotion, and are viewed as kind protectors. In current popular culture the dog is seen as faithful, fierce, playful, loving and sometimes an accessory.
In this body of work, I take “man’s best friend” for a walk. We are going to the Dog Show to celebrate the complexity, wisdom, and cuteness of our longtime allies. From the domesticated pooch to the wild canine, the human fascination with dogs transcends time and geography. By referencing historical and contemporary depictions of dogs, I aim to show their deep connections to our lives.
I grew up with dogs in my family and was comforted by our unspoken bonds. For me they create a moment of respite. The cruelty and anxieties of the world can be drowned out if only for a moment by the soulful relationship we have with these special companions. Each dog breed has its unique skill, temperament, and appearance, yet they can coexist within packs. I’ve met many unfamiliar dogs in my life. I approach each new interaction with an open heart and a discerning eye.
As I continue to make art in times of doubt, exhaustion, and uncertainty, dogs bring humor, joy, and play into the act of creating. The time I spend in my studio sculpting and looking at dogs, carves out moments of breath, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment. In tandem with the exhibition, the gallery will host a Best in Show Dog Show on Saturday, May 3 at 2 pm. We encourage people to bring their dogs to participate in a series of categories. For the event, Foster/White is partnering with Old Dog Haven, a local senior dog rescue. Donations in the form of cash, check, new, or like-new dog supplies will be accepted in the gallery.
