George Rodriguez's Basenji is one of eight dog sculptures from the 2023 Ritual Vessels exhibition. Modeled after a wooden African artifact from Congo, the sculpture is inspired by the Colima dog folk art sculpture from Mexico that served as a kind of template for the group of dogs. In the Congo, wooden folk art dogs would have nails hammered into the flat back as part of a ceremony.
