I’m distracted by a great variety of things but reliably the themes of survival, procreation and genesis are present, many times when I’m painting. In the same way, my aesthetic is one that follows a swerving, sometimes unnerving, practice. I carefully thin the paints and work within them in the short window of time before they dry. This method feels uniquely fit for the images, taking the paths in accordance with my own preferences (vibrant color payoff, clean sharp lines, patterns) and dislikes (waiting for paint to dry, mostly). A survival of the techniques and materials as I deem best. Working on raw canvas also allows the surface to remain active and absorbent and the paint stains, bleeds, and settles unpredictably. I discover the images, following an evolution as the composition comes into focus through improvisation and response. Even as I'm compelled by material to blur the distinctions between them, the improvisations become plants, animals, people and insects that then collide and reassemble into each other in a copy of the natural world. - kwonny
