Dominion VIII
Mark Rediske's artworks reference horizons, sky, and terrain. His surface patina and color wash conjure the erosion of ancient civilizations; his titles explore mythology and physical places or are drawn from the past. Developing a process that allows him to achieve unique effects in his work, Rediske creates exquisitely crafted panels; beautiful colors and painterly mark-making result in pieces that invite close inspection at different times of day and night. Rediske's capacity for composition and fluidity creates tension and resolution within each piece, while the slow fading from one color to the next adds a grounding quality his work.
In regard to the Dominion series, Rediske explains that "all of the paintings start with very thinned areas of paint that flows down the panels. As I work into them sometimes only minimal amounts of this first layer survives – but it is something to react to as I continue working the surfaces."
