MICHAEL WOLF

Michael Wolf's photographs capture the incredibly dense high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong, the transparency of the Chicago's buildings, and in Paris, the historic rooftops. From Tokyo, his narrative is one of anonymous faces pressed against the glass of subway cars. From his unique perspective, Wolf produced a body of work which deals with the complex reality of contemporary city life in a way that defies categorization, in direct response to the particularities of the places he photographed.

Michael Wolf studied at the University of California, Berkeley, before moving on to study with German Photographer Otto Steinert. His photographs have been included in exhibitions around the world: Stedelijk Museum, Breda Netherlands; Institut Valencia D’Art Modern, Valencia, Spain; Centre Photographique Rouen Normandie, Normandy, France; and galleries in France, China, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Korea, Turkey, Sweden, Australia, The United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and across North America. Wolf's work has also been included in many museum exhibitions, and his 2018 Life in Cities retrospective traveled to the House of Photography at the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, Germany; Fondazione Stelline, Milano, Italy; Fotomuseum den Haag, the Hague, Netherlands; and finally Les Rencontres d’ Arles, Arles, France. Wolf’s photographs are part of the permanent collections of museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; The San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA; and Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY. Michael Wolf passed away in 2019.
