Growing up in LA I loved airplanes and earned my pilots license on my 17th birthday. I was fascinated by how the city looked from the air and took my first aerial pictures in 1962.

Fifty years later I returned to the air in a helicopter with the newest high-resolution cameras to once again capture cities from above where you can see patterns and geometry that make up the manufactured landscape.

For this portfolio I photographed the vast maritime container ports of Los Angeles CA, and Newark NJ. Here container ships arrive and depart for world destinations carrying so much of what we use in our daily lives. The ships are loaded and unloaded using container cranes. The brightly colored containers are stored at terminals and then loaded onto waiting trucks and trains. - Jeffrey Milstein
