The works in this show represent a shift in sensibility for me. The paintings are denser, with heavily worked surfaces and attention to rich textures. I am open to a more intuitive process of discovery with each painting.
The works are initially manipulated with fluid transparent layers. This surface is then subjected to spontaneous mark-making with a variety of rigid and flexible tools. Scraping and overpainting are utilized to produce a complex and more dramatic surface of airy light and densely dark – areas of translucent stains mixed with elements of thick, color-saturated opacity. I believe there is a relationship between color, space and emotion, a reflection of mood, memory and place.
I see these paintings as abstract psychological landscapes. My influences come from my surroundings. The density or lightness of air, clouds and sky. And of course, the Pacific Northwest with its boundless presence of water, the regional impact of the Puget Sound, the lakes, and the mist. I am also greatly inspired by my garden with its lush and ever evolving mix of colors and textures – alternating between abundance and decay with the promising grace of renewal. - Mark Rediske
