In the fall and through the winter, plovers assemble in small numbers along the shores of the San Juan Islands. They remain here in these safe retreats until early spring, before they head northward to nest as far as the Arctic Circle. I have watched pairs of them settled into ledges bordering the shore. Some sleep as others remain alert for possible threats. Having fed well, now hunkered low, their bodies well insulated against the chill temperatures and wind, it is easy to imagine their state of contentedness. — Tony Angell
