Pacific loons that winter in the channels off the San Juan Islands always seem to be on the move from one foraging area to another where water turbulence in the channels stir up possible food sources for small fish. On one occasion, standing at a promontory at Shark Reef on Lopez Island, I could see a formation of the birds coming my way. In synchronized flight and just over the swells that swirled into and through the reefs nearby, they moved powerfully through the prevailing wind. — Tony Angell
