Surf's Edge, 1/1
In winter, along the outer edges of the sandspit that borders Fisherman Bay on Lopez Island, pairs and small assemblies of plovers fly. With velocity, they move and turn with what seems to be instantaneous precision. One can only imagine the remarkable means of communication between them. Landing on the sands at the outer edges of a receding wave, with stout bodies and short legs they scurry over the surfaces, probing for marine invertebrates. — Tony Angell
