STEVEN NEDERVEEN | BETWEEN WORLDS
A Radiant Breath, mixed media on panel, 60 x 60 inches
To open the New Year, Foster/White presents Between Worlds, a collection of works by Steven Nederveen. Combining landscape photography and painting, Nederveen's imagery exists between reality and dream.
A Compassionate Breath, mixed media on panel, 54 x 54 inches
This collection of work brings the viewer into a soft expanse where the universe becomes a kind and gentle extension of ourselves. Surrender to the timeless power of the ocean while being transported to an ephemeral dreaminess through glowing fields of saturated color.
My work is heavily influenced by meditation practices, serving as a guide for internal reflection and harmony with the external world. This body of work brings us into a liminal space between the vastness of our ocean and the timeless power of the sublime. A dreamlike world, connecting nature and the ethereal realm. Between Worlds brings out a world of colors and warm glows to give us a more personal and compassionate version of the universe, one that is in union with us.
I intentionally draw from the Abstract Expressionists in this work to use similar signifiers like Mark Rothko’s framing of color blocks and Barnett Newman’s ‘zip’ lines. Both artists were interested in the transcendent experience as well. - Steven Nederveen
