NICOLE KATSURAS | THE CAPRICIOUS LANDSCAPE
Welcome Show, oil on canvas, 20 x 20 inches
Foster/White presents The Capricious Landscape, Nicole Katsuras' inaugural solo exhibition in Seattle. Katsuras utilizes her signature free-flowing extruded paint application to create energetic landscapes and self-contained worlds.
Ginkgo Solaris, oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches
The Capricious Landscape invites viewers on a voyage through compositions that evolve with each step, mirroring the ever-shifting moods and thoughts of the observer. As one ventures deeper into the work, the scenery transitions from familiar forms to unexpected, fantastical terrains, reflecting the capricious nature of human experience.
These paintings are a response to my everyday surroundings, they are remembered personal landscapes. I recall walks down the gravel road to my cinder block studio which is nestled under a canopy of trees. In my view through the studio skylights I follow shifting light, passing clouds and falling leaves. This collection of paintings spans a full spectrum, from deeply colored moodscapes to light and airy skies. Land masses transition to flowing passages and open up to distant views.
The paintings oscillate between serene beauty and chaotic vitality, illustrating how our perception of environment can transform based on our own emotional state. Each painting presents an opportunity for a journey through a space of the artist’s invention, but also through the psyche, where the landscape becomes a canvas for internal exploration and adventure. - Nicole Katsuras
