Here, the Coachella Valley's familiar expanses of sky, mountains, and desert are compressed into horizontal strata, drawing to mind the accumulated forces that have shaped this geologically complex region. Bands of white, gray, sand, ochre, olive, black, and vivid red-orange move laterally across the canvas. Their irregular contours evoke fault lines, eroded hillsides, exposed rock, dry washes, and the folded terrain surrounding the valley. The intense reds and rust tones bring an unusual heat to Langford’s palette, conveying the arid climate and sun-baked geology of the Southern California desert.

The painting also reflects Langford’s longstanding relationship with cartography. Forms resemble fragments of a topographic map, yet they resist literal interpretation. Boundaries become expressive lines; landforms become abstract shapes. Coachella occupies a compelling space between landscape, map, and abstraction. It does not describe a single desert view so much as distill the region’s physical character—its heat, tectonic energy, erosion, and layered terrain—into a vivid visual geography.
