CHASE LANGFORD | METACARTO

Maverick Point (Utah), oil on canvas, 40 x 46 inches.

Metacarto, Chase Langford’s recent works, synthesize geographic forms and cartographic abstraction. Langford’s paintings utilize contrasting yet complementary colors to create layers reminiscent of geologic strata. Influenced by real and imagined landscapes, his depictions recall maps and aerial photography of seacoasts, mountains, farmland, and cities.

Ålesund, oil on canvas, 58 x 58 inches.

Geographic exploration in my paintings takes on many forms depending on the work. Most broadly, my visual sensibility is largely a result of years of map collecting, studying, and making.

The titles for these paintings can have a direct identifiable connection or a very loose relationship to specific places. They are not intended to drive the viewer's attention to that place, rather they are often a small clue to the intention of the work.

A good example of a somewhat direct intentional expression of a place is my Saddle Junction series. Saddle Junction is a high plateau pass up on Mt. San Jacinto near Palm Springs. The melting snow punctuated by large boulders, streams, and vegetation makes for an ever-changing environment to draw from. - Chase Langford
