I’m interested in how to construct a painting that includes other mediums, like temporary sculpture and photography.

This piece is somewhat different because the central shape is vertically oriented and most of my compositions feature a chunkier form that occupies most of the space.
It is a natural tendency for us to read vertical shapes as familiar things found within our surroundings, like buildings, trees, or other people. The title reflects that inclination and acknowledges the personification of the shape, even if it is subtle. This is also a slight nod to portraiture and architecture; both are indirect influences.

The dark shadowy areas were created separately and are not connected to the vertical shape. However, the shape itself is casting slight shadows that appear as off-register color, a doubling of the edges. The hot color enhances this effect.

Light, shadow, and color are used as materials…they transform the arrangement completely and unpredictably. Transformation is the key to my work.

I’m more interested in the sensations that are introduced and I want that physical experience to be primary. - Kate Petley
