Ornithographies #213, Alpine Swift, L’Estartit, Catalonia, 2021
This image shows alpine swifts in flight, captured at different depths. In the foreground, their boomerang-shaped silhouette is clearly visible, with dark wings and a white belly—distinctive features that differentiate them from the common swift. Like the common swift, they spend most of their lives in the air—though they don’t sleep while flying, they do spend many hours aloft, feeding in flight. This results in the erratic flight patterns visible in the image.
In the background, there is a flight line resembling a telephone wire—an elongated spiral typical of this species. The finer lines in the background correspond to birds flying farther away, while the foreground shows those that passed much closer. In one of the lower lines, you can see in detail how the bird rises, turns, and performs a quick wingbeat, illustratingthe unique flight style of this highly aerodynamic bird. - Xavi Bou
