Ornithographies #310, Vaux's Swifts, Portland, Oregon, 2024
In September 2024, during an exhibition in Portland, I visited one of the places I had long dreamed of seeing: the chimney at Chapman Elementary School, where thousands of Vaux’s Swifts gather during migration to roost.
Historically, they used to sleep in old, hollow trees, but as those have disappeared, they’ve adapted to using chimneys. This one, in particular, offered ideal conditions, though it conflicted with its use. Thanks to a citizen initiative, the heating system was adapted to preserve this natural spectacle, allowing the public to enjoy it each evening during its brief annual appearance.
As the sun sets, thousands of swifts begin flying chaotically around the chimney. Gradually, they organize into a perfect spiral —a living tornado— and enter one by one. It’s a unique display of synchronization and collective intelligence. - Xavi Bou
